Kicking Off the Food and Toy Drive

Nov 17, 2015 16:16 ET

The 27th annual DRPS Food and Toy Drive kicked off with music, cheers and a gymnasium full of excited students at St. Bridget Catholic School in Brooklin. The school overflowed the DRPS sleigh with their donations.

CTV News Anchor Ken Shaw hosted the event and was joined by Chief Paul Martin, Deputy Chief Chris Fernandes, Inspector Bruce Townley, the Food and Toy Drive Coordinator Cst. Paul Hawrychuk and members of the Auxiliary Unit.

The DRP band "The Heat" gave a lively performance to the students, who also showed their own talents through a drum band and dance routine. When Cst. Scott Dargie of "The Heat" sang Christmas carols, Santa himself came into the gymnasium to visit the kids and speak about the season of giving.
Chief Martin talked about importance of helping those in need in our community. He also thanked the volunteers that make the Food and Toy Drive possible. In 2014, 150 volunteers contributed more than 2,400 hours of work.

The Food and Toy Drive began in 1989 and provides families in need in Durham Region with food and toys for the holiday season. Throughout the months of November and December local businesses, organizations and individuals make donations of new unwrapped toys and non-perishable foods, which are then picked up by volunteers, sorted and distributed to members of the community through more than 90 community agencies.

Donations can be dropped off at any DRPS Division or any Fire Station in Oshawa, Whitby, Clarington and Ajax.

We would like to thank our sponsors. Without their support the success of the drive would not be possible:
