  DRPS Youth Coordinator Named Public Hero

DRPS member and Youth in Policing (YIP) champion Alex Marsico was recently presented with the 2015 Public Hero award by the Intercultural Dialogue Institute (IDI) GTA for his contribution and commitment to youth.

The ceremony took place in Peel Region where Alex was honoured for his leadership and mentoring skills as YIP Coordinator and community ambassador.

Alex originally joined the YIP program in 2011, and in 2012 he returned as a team leader. In 2013 he took on the role of YIP program coordinator and helped other team leaders and students grow while continuing to develop his own style of leadership.

In addition to the YIP program, Alex is also involved in the Town of Ajax After School Program; Fresh Start 4 Youth Services Inc. in Pickering; Boys and Girls Club of Durham - Ajax branch; and the Town of Ajax Youth Engagement Advisory Committee. Alex has passion for community engagement among youth, and thorough his work, has reached out to a multitude of students across Durham Region.

The Public Hero Award recognizes young people who, through participation in volunteer programs or co-op education programs in Police, Paramedic and Fire Services, have demonstrated outstanding performance.

IDI GTA is a non-profit organization that promotes respect and mutual understanding among people of all cultures and faiths through dialogue and partnership. IDI encourages interfaith and intercultural cooperation, tolerance and dialogue by sharing differences and similarities in an effort to enhance civil society, to promote the development of human values, and to advance diversity and multiculturalism in the society.
