  Local Company Supports Important Campaign

Our Human Trafficking team has come up with an innovative way to reach young teenagers who may be vulnerable to sex traffickers.

The team was looking for ways to reach girls in Grade 9 and 10 - the target demographic for pimps in the sex industry. D/Cst. Nancy Accettone on the HT team thought of an innovative way to get the DRPS Human Trafficking Hotline in front of them - a locker mirror.

"The human traffickers out there are targeting girls around the age of 14 and 15, so we wanted to come up with a product that these girls would actually look at and use," she says.

A quick phone call to Howard Humphrey, CEO of Manufacturing & Technology Centre (MTC) in Whitby led to a partnership that produced 10,000 mirrors at no cost to the DRP. The mirrors feature an advertisement on the bottom from MTC, who were happy to support such an important community safety campaign.

The mirrors are being distributed to Grade 9 students across Durham Region, after they've received a presentation on Human Trafficking. They attach to metal high school lockers by way of magnets. Due to concerns over safety, the locker mirrors are not made of glass - they are actually made from flexible plastic with a thin reflective backing, so they can't be shattered and used as a weapon.

Jade Harper, Executive Director of Victim Services of Durham Region (VSDR) praised the new partnership as a proactive measure that might save some local girls from getting drawn in to the business.

"We're hoping these young women who feel vulnerable can call the local services available when they feel they are being drawn into this world," she says.

The Human Trafficking Hotline in Durham Region is 1-888-579-1520 or 1-905-579-1520 ext. 4888. VSDR can be reached at ext. 3400.
