Celebrating 30 Years of Crime Stoppers

Jan 06, 2016 13:36 ET

January is Crime Stoppers month and this year the organization marks its 30th year assisting with crime prevention in Durham Region and around the world.

Since 1986, over 3,772 cases have been cleared in Durham Region and the program is credited with over 3,672 arrests. It has been responsible for removing over $74.7 million worth of drugs off our streets and for recovering over $7.1 million in stolen cash and property.

Thirteen volunteer board members from the community operate the program and fundraise for the tip rewards that are paid out. They are also supported by a police liaison. The key to the effectiveness of Durham Regional Crime Stoppers is the successful partnerships it fosters in the community. Working together with the public, the media and police, Crime Stoppers endeavours to make a positive difference in our communities.

Crime Stoppers is a non-profit, non-police organization that pays cash for anonymous tips. The program encourages the public to communicate information regarding illegal activity. Crime Stoppers will share this information with the police or other partnering agencies to assist in their investigations.

When citizens contact the Crime Stoppers program, they are assigned a special code number, which is used to identify them in all future dealings with the Crime Stoppers program. These citizens will only be known by their code number. If the information provided leads to a charge or an arrest, the tipster may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.

As part of the anniversary celebrations Crime Stoppers is conducting a poster contest for students at four Durham Region schools: Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary and GL Roberts Secondary in Oshawa, along with J. Clarke Richardson Secondary and Notre Dame Catholic Secondary in Ajax. Please see attached poster for more information.

Durham Regional Crime Stoppers has an impressive track record and remains an active and important community safety option. The toll free number is 1-800-222-8477 or visit Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
