  Big Paws to Fill

Jan 22, 2016 14:21 ET

DRPS would like to thank the public for their condolences after the passing of K-9 Magnum on Saturday. Magnum' handler, D/Cst. Kevin Dunlop has been overwhelmed with the community's support.

"Magnum saved both my life and countless other officers' lives while on duty," said D/Cst. Dunlop. "And I appreciate that people are recognizing the work he did and showing their support."

Magnum retired in August 2015 after eight years on the job. Since then, the K-9 Unit has been in search of the next partner for D/Cst. Dunlop.

Introducing Storm, a 16-month old German Shepard born in Hungary, who is half-way through his 65-day training with the K-9 Unit.

"Storm is a great dog and his training is going really well," said D/Cst. Dunlop, who hopes to have Storm ready for active duty in early March.

The training is very demanding and not all dogs that start the process make it to active duty. But Storm has made a good impression so far.

"He's progressing well and showing great potential," says D/Cst. Jim Stephenson, the leader of the K-9 Unit.

Back in 2008, Magnum tracked and caught a bank robbery suspect on his very first day on the job. Those are big paws for Storm to fill, but with the support of the DRPS K-9 Unit, he's poised to make great contributions to community safety.
