Apr 20, 2016 14:47 ET

DRPS Chief Paul Martin congratulated athletes and guests as they marked 42 days until the Special Olympics Ontario Provincial School Championships. Local students and dignitaries gathered at Central Collegiate Institute in Oshawa to celebrate the upcoming games.

"We are excited to have a major Special Olympics event back in Durham Region," said Chief Martin. "From the torch runs to the exhibition games with officers, the DRPS has been a long-time supporter of Special Olympics. We look forward to welcoming everyone in June."

From June 1-3, 2016, student athletes will compete on behalf of their school at various venues in Oshawa. Teams from five different sports have qualified through participating in regional qualifiers (52 in total) offered across Ontario. It was a tough competition with over 5,000 athletes attending qualifiers this season.

The Provincials will host over 600 athletes, 200 coaches and 300 volunteers. The athletes will participate in bocce, basketball, soccer, track and field and floor hockey at venues including the Oshawa Civic, Durham College/UOIT and Legends Arena.
