The 2016 Special Olympics Provincial Championships are officially underway following the opening ceremonies and lighting of the torch Wednesday in Oshawa.

DRPS joined Durham Region in welcoming over 600 athletes to Oshawa for the championships which take place over two days with athletes competing in five sports: bocce, basketball, soccer, track and field and floor hockey. They are joined by 200 coaches and 300 volunteers from across the province.

Events take place at The University of Ontario Institute of Technology and Durham College (UOIT/DC), the Oshawa Civic Centre and the Legend's Centre. Members of the Special Olympics Torch Run joined Chief Paul Martin, Regional Chair Roger Anderson, members of DRPS, local dignitaries and families and friends for the opening ceremonies to welcome everyone to the championships.

"I am very proud of the relationship we have with Special Olympics that spans two decades," said Chief Martin. "I wish all the athletes the best of luck and encourage them to have fun with their friends and fellow athletes."

Members from Durham schools including J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate, Henry Street High School, Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School, Oshawa Central Collegiate Institute, RS McLaughlin Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School, G L Roberts Collegiate and Vocational Institute and Brock High School were led into the arena by the DRPS Pipes and Drums. The group was also entertained by a local dance troupe and the DRPS Choir.

Students will compete with fellow athletes from as far away as Manitoba, showcasing the outstanding abilities, courage and drive that continues to demonstrate the spirit of Special Olympics.
