Youth in Policing Hammer Away with Habitat for Humanity

Jul 05, 2016 08:56 ET

A group of Youth in Policing (YIP) students, along with members of DRPS, strapped on their tool belts and hammered away to assist Habitat for Humanity in Oshawa on Monday.

Twenty YIP students gathered Monday morning at the Habitat for Humanity build site on Centre Street South in Oshawa, kicking off the first of many YIP community projects. The students were briefed on safety measures, and outfitted with hard hats, work boots and safety goggles. With a little instruction from DRPS officers and members of Habitat for Humanity, the kids were all set to build. YIP students worked hard and had the opportunity to give back to members of the community.

The YIP students participated in Habitat for Humanity's Phase 3A build, which will provide four new townhomes to members of Durham Region by December of this year. Their work on this Habitat for Humanity project helped kick off the eight-week summer youth program and the students and our DRPS officers look forward to getting back into the community.

The YIP program is an eight-week, paid summer employment opportunity for youth ages 15 to 18 years old, residing in Durham Region. These youth build confidence and leadership skills, and this program provides YIP students the opportunity to interact with members of DRPS, learn about policing and serve their community in ways they may not have otherwise had the opportunity to.

Twenty more YIP students will be back at the build site on July 27. For more information about the YIP summer program and to see what they have been up to, visit their Twitter page @drps_yip
