Intergenerational Dinner Brings Youth and Seniors Together

Oct 18, 2016 09:02 ET

Local students and members of DRPS are working to help prepare a special October Harvest Intergenerational Dinner for seniors tonight in Ajax Wednesday.

DRPS members will join students from J. Clarke Richardson High School in Ajax for an evening of intergenerational socializing as they help prepare and serve dinner to the group.

The event, held in the high school cafeteria, is one of many Intergenerational Dinners being held across the region. This student driven event started at Harwood Secondary School and has been running for more than 17 years.
It was first designed as a small community project to bring senior citizens and youth together and has since grown to almost 200 senior citizens. Students in the culinary program (ranging from grade 9 to grade 12) contribute to cooking, serving and cleaning up.

The Intergenerational Dinner is aimed at encouraging positive relationships between seniors and local youth. They receive the experience of interacting with senior citizens and also gain experience on hosting a large event.
The students organize the event from start to finish and take care of marketing, coordinating, cooking and serving the dinner. DRPS partners with the students to help host this amazing dinner and to show support in bringing the community together.

Many seniors return year after year for the great food and entertainment. It also gives them a chance to meet with and get to know young people and members of DRPS in their communities. For tickets and reservation information please contact: Heather Tyrrell at 905-619-9571.
