DRPS Children's Games Celebrates 32 years.

Oct 22, 2016 15:47 ET

The DRPS Children's Games celebrated its 32nd annual event at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Saturday, as athletes enjoyed a day of fun, friends and sportsmanship.

The annual event is designed to provide a fun and supportive sporting opportunity for children aged five to 18 with a variety of physical limitations. Athletes earn an Olympic-style medallion as their teams compete for the Chief's Trophy, participating in events such as moon-ball, wheelchair rugby and basketball.

This year began with the DRPS Children's Games receiving the 2016 David C. Onley Award for Leadership in Accessibility, Champion Award. A presentation took place recognizing the great work organizers do each year to bring this event together for young people.

The Games kicked off with the fanfare of opening ceremonies with platform guests including the 2015 top athletes Akif Irfan and Erin Fielding, DRPS Deputy Chris Fernandes, DRPS Inspector Bruce Townley, Regional Chair Roger Anderson and Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan. Members of the fire department were also on hand along with DRPS volunteers, auxiliary members and family.

After a morning of events, the athletes and their families enjoy lunch and entertainment by the DRPS rock band "The Heat." After lunch, the top two teams played an exciting game of wheelchair rugby against our Auxiliary and DRPS members. At the closing ceremonies each athlete was recognized for their contribution

The Games also partnered with representatives from DRPS, City of Pickering, Grandview Children's Centre/ Campbell Children's School and March of Dimes to fill a cruiser with pop tables. The tabs go toward building wheelchairs for children in need.

Congratulations to all the athletes and the organizers who have made this event possible for the past 32 years!
