4th Annual Gowns For Girls A Huge Success!

Apr 26, 2017 17:44 ET

Hundreds of girls filled the gym at Bobby Orr PS Wednesday afternoon in search of the perfect prom dress. Thanks to generous donations from the community, the girls had their pick of dresses, shoes, accessories and hair and make-up services. Many were joined by moms and dads who helped with decisions on the many items to choose from.

Now in it's fourth year, Gowns for Girls provides young women with the resources they need to attend their Spring Prom. Many do not have the economic resources needed to attend as some dresses can cost upwards of $600. The initiative began in 2014 by Constable Joylene MacNeil, a Youth Officer in Oshawa. She says the event helps make prom night special for hundreds of girls across the region.

"Prom and Graduation is a milestone event for every girl. The Gowns for Girls program helps to build confidence both inside and out thanks to the generous donations from our Community."

In 2014 there were 75 young ladies who came to the event, in 2015 it grew to 400 girls and in 2016 approximately 500 girls came through the doors! This year was no exception as crowds formed a line around the school in anticipation of the 3:30 opening.

"The many smiles and tears of happiness witnessed and some of the heartfelt stories we were entrusted with made all the efforts worthwhile," says Cst. MacNeil. "These events impact these young women's lives in such a positive way."

Cst. MacNeil was recently honoured with an IDI Public Heroe Award for her work on Gowns for Girls and other youth based initiatives.

A huge thank you to everyone who assisted with this event and all the community members who donated so generously.
