Durham Region is under a heat warning early this week with temperatures reaching the low thirties on Monday, Environment Canada reported. Temperatures are expected fall below heat warning criteria by Tuesday as a trough moves into Southern Ontario.
This blast of summer, the first heat event of the season, is a reminder for everyone to stay cool and safe with these tips:
* Try to stay inside and out of the heat. Basements are always cooler!
* Close all blinds facing the sun as this prevents a lot of heat from getting inside your house.
* Don't leave anyone in the car, including pets. Cars will heat up quickly putting anyone left in the car in danger.
* Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing with breathable materials to help keep you cool.
* Check your air conditioner to be sure it is working properly. If your house is too hot, try to get a fan and face the air directly on you or spend a couple of hours in a place that is air-conditioned, such as a mall or a friend's house.
* Refrain from any physical activity, especially outside. Your body can overheat and cause health risks.
* Remember to hydrate by drinking plenty of water before you feel thirsty.
* Check on the well-being of the elderly. Extreme heat conditions can affect the health of anyone who has breathing difficulties or heart problems.
* Arrange for frequent visits with friends and family. It will be easier to identify signs of heat illness in person than over the phone.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency and is something to watch out for. Signs include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, headache, muscle cramps and dizziness. If you are caring for someone who has heat stroke, call 911 immediately. While waiting for help try to cool the person down as much as possible by moving them to a cool place, apply cold water to large areas of their skin or clothing and fan them as much as possible.
