Over a Million Pounds of Food Collected For JUST GIVE

Jun 23, 2017 10:50 ET

The results are in for the Cram-a-Cruiser JUST GIVE Food Drive, with 1.25 million pounds of food collected across the GTA for those in need!

The event is hosted by the Michael "Pinball" Clemons Foundation, and this year DRPS officers and local schools were challenged to collect enough food donations to fill a police cruiser. The total food collected in Durham Region was 9,588 pounds. The total cash raised in Durham was $64,000. Organizers will match that to make a total donation of $128,000 to Feed the Need.

Last year, the event saw more than 444,000 lbs. of food collected for local food banks. This campaign was designed to inspire kindness through our communities by filling the food banks for the summer, at a time when they are usually empty. Not only is food donated at the schools, but the Foundation arranges for businesses to match donations, making the giving spread even further to those in need.

Back in May students and staff across the Region donated thousands of pounds of food items to help those in need in our community. Schools involved included: Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute, Bellwood Public School, Bowmanville High School, Captain Michael Vandenbos Public School, Meadowcrest Public School, Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, Sir Albert Love Catholic School, St. John Paul II Catholic School, St. Josephine Bakhita Catholic Elementary School, St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School, St. Patrick Catholic School, St. Wilfred Catholic School, St. Joseph Catholic School and Sir John A MacDonald Public Schoool.

The donated food was taken to Feed the Need in Oshawa. Each month, over 850,000 Canadians turn to food banks for help; more than one-third are children and youth. Thanks to everyone who participated, the foodbanks can feed those in need for months to come.
