In response to an increased number of theft from motor vehicle incidents in the Whitby and Oshawa areas, officers from Central West Division have been running a Lock It or Lose It campaign to raise awareness about property safety.
Police have knocked on hundreds of doors and handed out Lock it or Lose it pamphlets in an effort to educate homeowners about the risks of leaving their vehicles unlocked in their driveways.
There has been a number of thefts from unlocked vehicles over the past few weeks and often the vehicles are entered simply because the doors are left unlocked.
Items stolen include wallets, cellphones, GPS systems, lap tops and documents with personal information on them.
The Lock it or Lose It campaign aims to educate the public and remind drivers to always:
- Lock their car doors
- Roll up their windows
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Put keys in their pocket.
Many thefts of vehicle contents are easily prevented. The key to protecting your vehicle is in your hands. Keep yourself from becoming an easy target by properly securing your vehicle.
