  Grand Slam Challenge Builds Bridges

Sep 13, 2017 11:26 ET

It's a perfect day for a ball game as teams from Durham Regional Police, Ontario Shores and Durham Mental Health Services (DMHS) hit the diamonds for the 6th Annual Grand Slam Challenge Baseball Tournament at Ontario Shores.

The day began with a ceremonial pitch featuring DRPS Chief Paul Martin; President and CEO, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, Karim Mamdani; and Ontario baseball player Zach MccQuaid. The event brings together DRPS members and members of Ontario Shores and DMHS for a day of friendly competition, providing a fun atmosphere to enjoy some camaraderie and team work, while building positive relations.

Before throwing out a ceremonial pitch, Chief Martin brought greetings and thanked organizers for making this initiative possible and building on the positive relationship between DRPS, Ontario Shores and DMHS. "This event has helped to reduce the stigma around mental health and enhance our relationship with the mental health support in our community," he said. "Events like this provide an opportunity for everyone enjoy each other's company while having fun. There are no uniforms, titles or patient information, just people coming together for the same collective experience." President of Ontario Shores Karim Mamdani says the event represents everyone as individuals and works to brings down barriers.

Back in 2012, members of the DRPS Mental Health Support Unit, including Cst. Scott Logan, organized a hockey game with Ontario Shores to create a positive experience for everyone involved. The event was a huge success that eventually led to organizing an annual baseball tournament. We are now in the sixth year for both events and the hope is that they will continue with all partners involved.
Scott says DRPS members work closely with both agencies and this event provides a fun atmosphere to break down barriers and build bridges.

Thanks to everyone who came out to participate in this fun-filled event.
