Remembering Fallen Police and Peace Officers

Sep 25, 2017 08:28 ET

Chief Paul Martin proudly led a large contingent of DRPS officers, Auxiliary members and civilians at the 40th annual Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial march and service in Ottawa on Sunday Sept. 24th

In sweltering heat that peaked at 40 degrees Celsius, members of the DRPS joined with over a thousand officers from across Canada in downtown Ottawa to remember the women and men who have fallen while keeping our communities safe. Chief Paul Martin, Deputy Chief Chris Fernandes and Deputy Chief Uday Jaswal led the large contingent from the DRPS, who paid their respects to the over 850 fallen officers on the Honour Roll. They marched with other officers along Wellington Street to the front lawn of the federal parliament building.

In 1998, the federal government proclaimed the last Sunday of September as Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day - an opportunity for Canadians to express their appreciation and gratitude for police and peace officers who have lost their lives keeping communities safe.

The DRPS Pipes & Drums joined about a dozen other pipe bands from across Canada to play in the parade as hundreds of Ottawa citizens and visitors lined the streets to show their support. As officers passed by, members of the public applauded them as a sign of respect and gratitude.

The DRPS was well represented on the running and cycling teams that made their way from Toronto and Aylmer, Ontario to the nation's capital to join in the ceremony. The National Police Officers' Memorial Run was a 460 km relay that took over three days to complete and originated at the Ontario Police Memorial at Queen's Park in downtown Toronto. The Canadian Police Memorial Ride to Remember started at the Ontario Police College near London, Ontario and involved 140 participants this year.
