There were smiles all around as hundreds of students helped kick off the 29th Annual DRPS Food and Toy Drive in Oshawa Wednesday morning.
Members of DRPS and school board officials gathered at Dr. S.J. Phillips PS to officially launch this year's drive which was hosted by CTV news anchor Ken Shaw. Chief Paul Martin and Chief-for-a-Day winner Aruba Kashif thanked the students for their generosity and spoke about the importance of giving back to the community. DRPS Deputy Chris Fernandes, Inspector Bruce Townley and Food Drive Co-ordinator Darryl Rice were also in attendance.
Members of "The Heat" band had the crowd clapping and singing along to holiday songs as they anxiously awaited the arrival of Santa Claus. Much to the delight of the students, the jolly man arrived with candy canes in hand for everyone.
The Food and Toy Drive provides thousands of families in need in Durham Region with food and toys for the holiday season. Throughout the months of November and December local businesses, organizations and individuals donate food and toys, which are then picked up by volunteers, sorted and distributed to more than 100 community agencies.
Donations can be dropped off at any DRPS Division, Regional Headquarters, and any Fire Station in Oshawa, Whitby, Clarington and Ajax.
A special thank you goes to the many volunteers who will help with the Food and Toy Drive this year. Last year over 150 volunteers contributed more than 2,400 hours of work getting the donations to those in need. They travelled over 25, 000 kilometres delivering items just in time for the holidays in vehicles generously donated by local dealers.
