Pedestrians Reminded to "Do the Bright Thing"

Nov 08, 2018 09:30 ET

With the clocks falling back this past weekend and less available daylight everyday, officers are launching the "Do the Bright Thing" campaign.

To promote pedestrian and cycling safety, the DRPS, in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation, GO Transit and the Region of Durham Traffic Department launched the Do the Bright Thing campaign yesterday in Whitby.

Officers handed out LED lights to citizens getting on/off the GO Transit trains at the Whitby GO Station. They also be handed out pamphlets educating citizens on how pedestrians, cyclists, electric scooters and motorists can make it safer for everyone utilizing our roadways. With decreased daylight during the day, we encourage you to see and be seen by others. Take your eyes off your electronic devices and focus on where you're walking.

The aim of the campaign is to promote and reinforce pedestrian safety, including urging pedestrians to wear reflective clothing, refrain from texting or talking on their cell phone while crossing roadways, and to use caution when crossing the street.
