  Meet Our New Chief (for a Day)

Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine is handing over the reigns for a day to a ten year old. Lanise Lywood, a grade 5 student from Ajax, was chosen as this year’s Police Chief for a Day after a volunteer committee selected her essay from hundreds of submissions last week. Lanise begins her new duties as Police Chief at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2003.

The five finalists from the Durham District School Board presented their essays, entitled “What it is like to be a Police Officer,” to the committee at Police Headquarters in Oshawa.

The winner, Lanise LYWOOD, is a student from Dr. Roberta Bondar Public School in Ajax. She will be picked up from her school in a police cruiser and sworn in as Chief for the Day on November 3rd at police Headquarters in Oshawa. Her ceremonial duties will include a tour of the building and an introduction to various police units, including tactical, polygraph, major crime, Air 1, and forensic identification.

Lanise will also receive a Durham Regional Police Chief’s uniform, a gift pack from the police service and on November 6th, 2003, Lanise and two guests will be VIP guests of the Durham Regional Police at the first annual Police Appreciation Night, at Trafalgar Castle School in Whitby, where she will read her winning essay.

Lanise’s itinerary as Police Chief for a Day includes the following:

08:30 a.m. – Chief Picked up at School – Dr. Roberta Bondar P.S.
09:25 a.m. – Chief arrives at Headquarters – Meets Chief McAlpine and Staff
09:30 a.m. – Chief sworn in by Staff and Meets the Media – Answers Questions
09:45 a.m. – Chief tours Headquarters – Meets with Tactical Unit, Forensic Ident, Communications, Major Crime, Polygraph and inspects interrogation rooms
10:45 a.m. – Chief Scheduled Flight in Air1
11:45 a.m. – Chief briefed by Traffic Services @ Champlain Center – Inspects some of the Equipment, Motorcycles and Mobile Command – Meets Canine Cst. Mounsteven and his dog, Chase
12:20 p.m. – Chief scheduled for Lunch with Dignitaries
01:00 p.m. - Chief returns to School – Dr. Roberta Bondar P.S.
