Ajax - 03 May 2002

Citizens in Durham Region now have more access to local police information than ever before.

Durham Regional Police Chief Kevin McAlpine officially launched the Service's revised web site and unveiled the new abbreviated web address, today. Eventually, that short address will be decaled on every cruiser and will be included on all business cards and letterhead. The launch took place today before 550 enthusiastic Lakeside Public School students in south Ajax.

In addition to a host of personal and property safety tips for adults, the web site also includes a special Kid's Section where youngsters can learn more about the police helicopter Air One, the Canine Unit and how to protect themselves against bullies.

The web site will feature a 24-hour police activity report, daily media releases, the top police story of the day, a directory of police programs and services, and Over the Counter services. The site also provides descriptions of each unit within the Service, along with contact information, "tools of the trade" and success stories. There's also a section on Unsolved Crimes, Wanted Persons and Missing Persons. The Service's Annual Report and 2002-2004 Business Plan are also on the site.

Although Durham Regional Police have had a presence on the web for many years, a staff team has been working for the past several months in revitalizing the site and updating the information. The old web address - - will continue working simultaneously with the new address for a period of one year to ensure a smooth transition.

Dave Selby, the Director of Corporate Communications for the DRPS, says the site will get even better as more statistical information is added in the coming months.

"Residents in Durham Region are only a mouse click away from finding out even more information about police activity and community safety," he says.
