DRPS received the International Association of Chiefs of Police/Motorola Webber Seavey Award for Quality in Law Enforcement on Nov. 22 at the Durham District School Board’s monthly board meeting.
DRP Chief Vern White, DDSB Chairperson Michael Barrett, DDSB Vice Chairperson Susan Shetler, and Director of Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Care Centre Shirley Burnett accepted the award from Motorola President Mike Hortie.
S/Sgt. Kevin Morash, Det. Dave Emmorey and Sergeant Michelle Hoard, along with community partners from Lakeridge Health Corporation and the Durham District School Board, developed the Be Aware…Be Safe: Sexual Assault and Violence Prevention program to be distributed to schools in the Durham Region. With funding from a grant, a resource containing a video and instructional guide on safety and victim services was developed. Originally intended for secondary schools, the program has been expanded to include intermediate students. The program is in 25 secondary schools, 100 elementary schools, social work teams, and other organizations. This creates awareness of the services available to students and ensures the information is readily available.
The Webber Seavey/Motorola Award recognizes innovative projects in law enforcement and have sustained results for a minimum of one year. DRPS was one of two police services recognized in Canada. The other was the Edmonton Police Service.
