Passing of Well Known Retired Officer

Feb 15, 2006 06:57 ET

Hundreds of DRP officers are mourning the loss of one of the Service’s most well known and respected retired members, Staff Sergeant Roy Good. Roy passed away Saturday, February 11th after a brief battle with cancer.

Roy was one of the original officers hired by the Durham Regional Police after it formed in January of 1974, and he spent over 28 years on the job.

Roy worked diligently as the DRPS Community Liaison Officer, sitting on various community boards and fund-raising projects and reaffirming the Service’s commitment to the community. He also preserved much of the history of policing in Durham Region by rescuing old documents and photographs, publishing a history of the DRPS in 1999 and establishing a small museum at Headquarters.

Roy was instrumental in raising funds for the DRP Honour Guard and for the DRP Pipes & Drums. Roy also helped to raise $60,000 for the DRP Ceremonial Unit.

Roy organized internal fund-raising campaigns for a host of charities, including the United Way, and he served on the Board for Parkwood Estate, assisting with fundraising efforts that led to a major renovation to the estate grounds. Roy was also instrumental in the success of the annual Cops For Cancer initiative and worked with local Alzheimer and Arthritis Societies. He was involved in various hospital campaigns, as well as the Kinsmen Club of Oshawa and the Knights of Columbus in Courtice.

After his retirement, Roy continued serving the community on several Parkwood Estate committees and became the Community Chair of the Cancer Centre Campaign for Durham Region.

Roy will be deeply missed by his many friends and colleagues at DRP.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at St. Therese's Catholic Church, 3800 Courtice Rd (approx. 1.5 km north of Hwy 2). The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Durham Region Cancer Centre and/or Hearth Place.

Flags at all DRP Divisions and facilities will be lowered to half staff.
