May 29, 2006 09:24 ET

Retired DRPS Deputy Chief Rod Piukkala was recently awarded with the Order of Merit of the Police Forces by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada.

The investiture took place May 19th at Rideau Hall in Ottawa and the 34-year police veteran was one of 29 officers from across Canada who were made Members of the Order of Merit.

The Order was created in 2000 to recognize conspicuous merit and exceptional service by members and employees of Canadian police forces whose contributions extend beyond protection of the community. In particular, Deputy Chief Piukkala was recognized for "distinguished and outstanding leadership and for significant achievements in race relations, diversity, homicide investigation as well as in national and international police training."

Tickets are now available for a public send off for Deputy Chief Piukkala, to be held June 7th at Deer Creek Golf & Banquet Facility in Ajax. The stand up reception runs from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and the $40 tickets are available from Susan at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 4419.
