Durham Region Awarded 2008 Spring Games

May 31, 2006 10:01 ET

Police Chief Vern White brought a few hundred of his friends to Regional Council today to announce that Durham Region has been awarded the 2008 Special Olympics Ontario Spring Games.

The Council Chamber was packed with local community organizations, volunteers and local athletes who will be participating in the Games. They will be held May 29th to June 1st, largely at Durham College/U.O.I.T in north Oshawa. Durham Regional Police have always been a big supporter of Special Olympics and placed a bid for the 2008 Games several months ago.

Approximately 700 athletes and their families and friends from across Ontario will come to Durham Region for this tremendous event. The athletes will be competing in swimming, bowling, power-lifting and basketball competitions.

We will also welcome over 170 coaches and athletes to Durham Region. To make this major event happen, we will be assisted by an army of approximately 600 volunteers.
