Durham Regional Police Chief Vern White and members of the Community Services Unit recognized some of the 400 citizens who contribute their time and talents as DRPS volunteers at a ceremony on June 1st.
Over 60 volunteers were recognized for contributing from three to as high as 20 years of service to policing programs such as Road Watch, The Kids' Safety Village, Neighbourhood Watch, the Victim Crisis Assistance and Referral Services (VICARS) and Crime Stoppers.
Some of the original members of Durham Regional Crime Stoppers - Dave Flett, Mike Mothersill, Jack Schill and Eric Wright - were recognized for 20 years of service. A special award went to Ted Rathwell for 10 years of outstanding service to the Kid's Safety Village in Whitby.
Chief White called volunteering "the greatest form of public service" and said his Officers simply couldn't do their jobs every day without the assistance of volunteer citizens.
"We truly appreciate the work you provide every day." he said.
