Police Chief Vern White is pleased to introduce Durham Region’s newest Superintendent, Sherry Whiteway.
Superintendent Sherry Whiteway will be officially promoted on October 29th, 2006 and will be responsible for Regional Operations. Superintendent Whiteway will be in charge of such units as: Air1, K-9, Tactical Support, Traffic, Marine, Nuclear Security and Communications 9-1-1.
Superintendent Sherry Whiteway began her career with the Durham Regional Police Service in January 1980 and served in a uniform patrol capacity in Pickering, Ajax, Uxbridge and Whitby. Over her career, she has worked to develop and implement many programs including facilitating the opening of the North Ajax Community Policing Centre.
Superintendent Whiteway commanded the Ajax /Pickering Community Office and over 140 officers. She is currently officer in charge of the Communications/ 9-1-1 Unit and is heading a region-wide review of officer deployment. She has received many accolades including the Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding commitment to Community and the Woman of Distinction Award.
Sherry’s husband, Tom is a Sergeant and eldest daughter; Nicole is a constable with the DRPS. Her father, Herb LeGard is a retired Staff Sergeant of the DRPS.
Durham Regional Police congratulates Superintendent Sherry Whiteway on promotion. She is the first female in the history of the DRPS to achieve this rank.
