  DRPS Hosts Cannabis Training Workshop

Aug 07, 2018 10:34 ET

The DRPS is hosting over 40 police leaders representing 16 police services from across Ontario and parts of Canada to discuss the challenges and impacts surrounding the legalization of recreational cannabis this October.

Held at the Police Education and Innovation Centre at Durham College, the Cannabis Training Workshop is aimed to provide information relevant to training of police service members in regards to the new cannabis legislation, both at the Federal and Provincial levels in Ontario.

RCMP Cpl. Shane Holmquist flew in from British Columbia to provide insight to the Federal training curriculum. Ontario Police College representatives, Laura Gorczynski and Andrew Ferguson, reviewed the eLearning programs at the provincial level.

James Palangio, representing the Ministry of the Attorney General, spoke to the officers on the legal issues around training.

A round table discussion concluded the day and focused on each service's specific training needs around this new legislation.

This is a unique opportunity for all members in attendance to learn from one another, enhance current training programs and have a unified approach to training and enforcement.
