Cops and Kids Team Up for Holiday Shopping

Dec 05, 2018 14:12 ET

With help from DRPS officers, 46 students spent the day shopping at the Pickering Town Centre (PTC) as part of the 13th Annual CopShop event. This initiative takes place at shopping malls across the country.

CopShop unites young people with officers as they get to know each other while shopping for holiday gifts for themselves and their families. The kids were presented with a generous $200 gift card from the PTC.

The children chosen for CopShop are selected from recommendations based on need, recognition of specific academic or sports achievement or because of volunteer efforts that are making a difference in the community.

Before the shopping spree began, everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch donated each year by East Side Mario's in the mall. After a day of fun filled shopping, the kids had their gifts all wrapped up and ready to go.

Superintendent Joe Maiorano thanked the Pickering Town Centre, East Side Mario's and all the officers who volunteered their time to act as "personal shoppers" for the kids. He encouraged everyone to pay it forward this holiday season. For the kids, the kindness shown to them can be extended to others.

The CopShop event was started several years ago by the Halifax Shopping Centre and ran at the same time in Halifax, Pickering, Winnipeg and Calgary. Since then the event has expanded to 11 malls across Canada. Roughly 300 children participate in CopShop this year.

Thanks to everyone from DRPS, including organizer Cst. Robin Roychoudhury, the Pickering Town Centre and East Side Mario's who worked hard to make this event a huge success.
